Winny, the old kodiak brown bear at Zoo Duisburg. Taken June 2009. She died April 2010. RIP. Do not steal my photos.
Did you know? -There are several subspecies of brown bears: For example Grizzly, Kodiak and Kamtschatka. -Zoo Duisburg kept 3 siblings of the kodiak which is about the largest of brown bears. They all died of old age. -After the last one, Winny, died, they decided to give up keeping this subspecies because they rarely reproduce in zoos, and they are not endangered in their home at North America. -Zoo Duisburg is currently rebuilding this old beton exhibit, making it at least 3 or 4 times as big, much more natural, with a river flowing through and trees standing in it. (It was only a beton platform with a beton grate aorund it before). -After renaturalizing this exhbit and making it so much bigger they will keep spectacled bears, a smaller bear species from South America, who are much more active, and for example love to climb. -They are endangered and often reproduce in zoos. So there is hope to see baby bears in the future!
