Did you know?
-Lowland tapirs are often kept in zoos and are quite easy to breed. Duisburg has a baby almost every year.
-The last years, only males were born. (Heinz-Dieter 2006, Camillo 2007, Guerreiro 2009, Pepe 2010)
-Tapirs are mammals related to horses and rhinos.
-The lowland tapir comes from South America, they live in rainforests and love to take a bath.
-Zoo Duisburg keeps them with giant anteaters and capybaras.
-The babies have stripes to camouflage them in their surrounding to hide from predators like jaguars, and the stripes begin to vanish when they are not even half a year old. The stripe pattern is individual.
