-There are african but also rare asian or indian lions.
-Zoo Duisburg keeps 3 african lions, a male and 2 females.
-To not breed, the male is usually sterelized, without removing his testicles, because if you do that, the male looses his mane and looks like a female.
Sometimes the females do not recognize him then as male anymore and attack him. Thats why they only cut the seminal ducts.
-Lions often sleep up to 20 hours a day and in Africa they prefer to hunt at night, when the heat is not that big anymore.
-Lion is the only big cat that lives in big groups.
-If a male lion kills the leader of a group to become leader himself, he also kills all the babies of the females, so they can get pregnant from himself earlier. They do this to spread their own genetics faster.
-Today lions are in danger because of habitat loss, cruel "sport" hunters who still hunt them for their fur and teeth and poachers who do the same but illegally. Even epidemic illnesses can kill huge amounts of lions.
